Turning 65? Florida Medicare Coverage Options

Florida Medicare Enrollment

When Can you sign up for Medicare Coverage in Florida?

At Direct Insurance Network, we help Florida residents of all ages with their health insurance.  Medicare is a Federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older.  Medicare also covers people under 65 with certain disabilities.

There is a 7-month period to sign up for Medicare when you turn 65.  You can first enroll three months before you turn 65.  You can still enroll the month that you turn 65.  You can also enroll three months after the month you turn 65.

Let us help you apply for Medicare in Florida.  The most popular types of plans that we provide include Florida Medicare Advantage Plans, Florida Supplement or Medigap Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans.  We will go over all three of these Florida Medicare coverage options below.

Florida Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans (MA & MAPD) Include all benefits and services covered under Parts A and B.  Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) will be provided from the Medicare Advantage Plan and not from Original Medicare.  There are several types of Florida Medicare Advantage Plans including HMO’s and PPO’s. These types of plans are run by private insurance companies such as Aetna, Humana, and United Healthcare.

Florida Medicare Advantage Plans may or may not include Part D Prescription Drug Plans.  Many Florida Medicare Advantage Plans include extra benefits and services such as dental, hearing, vision and wellness programs.  All Florida Medicare Advantage plans feature an out-of-pocket maximum.  In order to be eligible to enroll in a Florida Medicare Advantage Plan, you must be entitled to Part A and enrolled in Part B of Medicare.

The cost of Florida Medicare Advantage Plans can vary.  Certain plans have a monthly premium, while others don’t.  Most Florida residents will also need to pay for their Medicare Part B coverage separately.  Florida Medicare Advantage plans include deductibles, copayments and Out-of-Pocket Maximums.  Florida Medicare recipients who enroll in these types of plans usually need to stay within a certain network of providers and facilities.  Some Medicare Advantage Plans do offer out-of-network benefits.

Florida MediGap (Supplement) Plans

Medicare Supplement Plans provide a broad range of coverage for Florida residents.  These plans cover almost all Medicare Approved care that Parts A and B don’t cover.  Florida Medigap policies normally don't cover dental care, long-term care, vision, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

Florida residents with supplement plans don’t have any deductibles, networks, copays, or coinsurance.  Many of these Medigap plans provide coverage that “Original Medicare” doesn’t provide such as medical care while traveling abroad.  Current Florida Medigap plans don’t offer prescription drug coverage.

At Direct Insurance Network, we sell Medicare supplemental insurance plans from many top-rated companies such as AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans insured by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company.  Let us help you find the best Florida Medicare supplement for you and your family.

Florida Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)
Florida Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

Florida residents turning 65 can enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan along with their Medigap policy.  Prescription drug coverage also comes with many Medicare Advantage Plans.  Part D plans offer copays for most covered prescription drugs.

Most Florida Part D Drug Plans cover different categories of drugs called tiers.  Usually the lower tiers have lower copays for drugs such as generics.  Higher tiered drugs such as specialty drugs usually have a higher copay or cover a percentage of the drug cost.

At Direct Insurance Network, we provide Medicare Prescription Drug Plans from many top rated companies including Aetna, Humana, Unitedhealthcare and WellCare.  Let us help you find the best Medicare Prescription Drug Plan for you or someone you know.  A Florida Prescription Drug Plan can be purchased when you turn 65 or during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period.  The Medicare open enrollment period is October 15 – December 7 every year.
